Carla C. Rife
Before going into private practice Carla worked at the Hennepin County Family Justice Center (FJC) as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Paul R. Scoggin. Carla also worked at the Minnesota Court of Appeals for a year as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Jeffrey M. Bryan. In law school, Carla discovered her passion for family law while working as a student attorney in a clinic called the Family Law Project. Carla moved from Wisconsin to Minnesota in 2015 with her husband after they both graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School.
Carla has handled numerous marital dissolution, custody, and paternity matters. Carla has experience dealing with a variety of family law issues regarding parenting time, child support, spousal maintenance, property division, emergency motions, third party custody and visitation, contempt and domestic abuse. During her time clerking in trial court, Carla conducted hearings and assisted in the drafting of divorce decrees, custody and parenting time orders, child support orders, and more. At the Minnesota Court of Appeals, Carla wrote memoranda and assisted in the drafting of appellate opinions in a variety of different areas of law. She has worked on appellate opinions regarding family law topics like division of property and custody.
In law school, Carla also had the opportunity to represent Wisconsin residents in motions for modification of child support and parenting time, and a marital dissolution. Carla learned about how family court matters intersect with other areas of law from her time interning with the Guardian Ad Litem Division in the Milwaukee County Children's Court, where she worked on permanency plans in Child in Need of Protection or Services (CHIPS) and Termination of Parental Rights (TPR) matters.Before law school, Carla earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Legal Studies from the University of Wisconsin Madison.
In her spare time, Carla enjoys going for long walks along Minnehaha Creek and listening to podcasts. She enjoys drawing and crafts of all kinds, especially crochet.
Carla was proud to serve the citizens of Hennepin County and the State of Minnesota as a court employee, and she is proud to continue to serve Minnesota and Wisconsin families as an associate attorney with Kniess Law, LLC
